'Akiohala

(Hibiscus furcellatus)

Indigenous: Native to Hawaii and elsewhere 

 

 

 

Description: Native hibiscus with beautiful purple flowers that open from the stems that stand above the rest of the plant, height up to 8’and spread up to 8’

Sun and water requirements: Full sun, water in and then reduce once established

'Ākulikuli

(Sesuvium portulacastrum)

Indigenous: Native to Hawaii and elsewhere 

Description: Low crawling succulent ground cover with small purplish pink flowers, height 2-5” and spread up to 2’

Sun and water requirements: Full sun, water in and then reduce once established

Lei: Flowers, leaves and branches

'Ilima papa: Ground Cover

(Sida fallax)

Indigenous: Native to Hawaii and elsewhere 

Description: Ground cover with small orange/yellow flowers, height 7” and spread 3-6’

Sun and water requirements: Full sun, water in and then reduce once established

Note: 'Ilima is the island flower of Oahu

Description: A fern with erect narrow fronds, height up to 3’ and spread up to 3’

Sun and water requirements: Partial shade but can handle full sun, medium water

(Vigna mariana)

Description: Fast growing ground cover or can grow up a tree, fence or trellis with small yellow flowers, height up to 1’ and can spread up to 12’

Nehe

(Lipochaeta)

Endemic: Native to Hawaii

 

Description: Sprawling perennial herb ground cover with small yellow flowers, height up to 8” and spread up to 6’

Sun and water requirements: Full sun, water the ground not the leaves in and then reduce once established

 

'Ohai

(Sesbania tomentosa)

Endemic Endangered: Native to Hawaii

 

 

 

 

Description: Shrub with sprawling branches in lower environments or small upright trees in higher elevations with clusters of 2” orange flowers with streaks of yellow and red that resembles a butterfly, height up to 18’ and spread up to 18’

Sun and water requirements: Full sun, water in and then minimal water
